Weekly Update: Director’s Note, Friday, May 17, 2013

The end of the school year is quickly approaching with revision and then End-of-Year Exams!  As in the past, during revision weeks the students in grades 1-9 will take the ERB external exams.

The Educational Testing Bureau’s Comprehensive Testing Program assessments will be administered to students in grades 1-9 beginning next week.  ISM will be using the online version of the exams beginning this year.  Students had the opportunity to practice the online exams to familiarize them with the format.   Please remind your child of the importance of these exams as they are nationally normed tests.

Important Notice:

The 1st Floor Link will be closed for air conditioning upgrades on Monday and possibly further into the week.  We are asking that families use the door by the lower school computer lab as an entrance to the ECE, KG and LS classrooms.  The main entrance will continue to be the entrance for the main office.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

Weekly Update: Director’s Note, Friday, April 12, 2013

Hopefully, the “Spring Snows” are over and the weather will move towards warm and sunny!  Our students, parents, and staff have been busily preparing for the opening night of the ISM spring musical, “Oklahoma!”.

‘OKLAHOMA!’, which is based on Lynn Riggs’s 1931 play, ‘GREEN GROW THE LILACS’, is set in Oklahoma Territory in 1906. This classic of musical theatre includes some of the best known songs in musical theatre: ‘OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNIN’, ‘SURREY WITH THE FRINGE ON TOP’, ‘PEOPLE WILL SAY WE’RE IN LOVE’, and of course, ‘OKLAHOMA!’. The show tells the story of the high spirited rivalry between the farmers and the cowmen, the romance of cowboy Curly and farm girl Laurey, and the tormented farmhand Jud who tries to tear them apart, the flirtatious Ado Annie and the steadfast, down to earth Aunt Eller who teaches everyone to persevere. The lively dance numbers, the “dream ballet” and exceptional lead vocals are sure to be a highlight of the show.

Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ‘OKLAHOMA!’ opens April 19 and runs through April 28.

Adults $10.00 – Students $7.00. To order tickets, contact the box office at 952-918-1871.

We hope to see everyone in the ISM PAC for one or all of the performances!

Weekly Update: Director’s Note, Friday, October 26, 2012

As the world seems to grow smaller due to the wonders of technology the staff, students, and parents at The International School of Minnesota are all aware of the value-added of contributing to others through service projects.  Every year, The International School of Minnesota chooses a full school service project that supports both our local and global communities.  The goal of ISM Against Hunger is to introduce our students to social responsibility and how they can make a difference in our world.

For the past 3 years, ISM’s Student Life Organization™, staff and parents participated in a fundraising project to raise money for food which was contributed to both local food pantries as well as to families in the bateys of the Dominican Republic.  The full school service learning project was enriched for some students, parents, and staff when they visited the villages in the Dominican Republic, delivering food that was packed by the ISM community.

Attached to this email you will find the first document from the ISM Against Hunger Committee announcing the Parent Information Meeting which will be held on Wednesday, October 31, from 8:30am-9:00am in the PAC.  Watch the ISM Parent Connection Website and The ISM Pulse for information about the upcoming 2012 ISM full school service project and learn about ways that you can be involved!

It was great seeing all of the parents and guardians throughout the corridors of The School on Wednesday and Thursday!  I hope you all had very constructive Parent/Teacher conferences.

I would like to bring to your attention that the ISM boys’ HS soccer team will be participating in the Eastern Minnesota Athletic Conference Tournament which will take place at McMurray Fields in St. Paul on Monday, October 22, and Tuesday, October 23.

If the boys win on Monday, they will play in the championship on Tuesday. The Husky Booster Club is sponsoring a fan bus and would like to invite staff, parents and students in grades 9-12  to attend the game via fan bus.   In order to ride the bus, students in grades 9-12 must submit the permission form attached to this email by Tuesday morning.   Students from Preschool–GR 8 are invited to ride the bus accompanied by a parent.

Save the Date:  Students will be inducted into the NHS and NJHS on Thursday, October 25, at 7:00PM in the Leila C. Saad Performing Arts Center.  Current NHS and NJHS members should attend this event.

Weekly Update: Director’s Note, Friday, September 14, 2012

Next week is Homecoming Week at ISM and the SABIS® Student Life Organization™ prefects have been working feverishly to provide a fun-filled schedule for students in grades 4-12.  Please read the attached Weekly Update to find out how your child can participate.

This week several SLO™ prefects have been organizing participation in the  “The State Farm Celebrate My Drive”, a teen-driver awareness promotion.  This is a national promotion that is giving $100,000 to 13 different school across the country.  One school in the Minneapolis area will win one of the $100,000 grants.  The winning school is based on online votes and is calculated based on a matrix of factors including the over-all enrollment.

Please help us by going to the website celebratemydrive.com where you can vote for ISM.  To participate in the School Vote you must be 14 or older.  Participants do not have to be enrolled in ISM, so parents, grandparents, etc. may vote.  Voting ends today at midnight.

Also attached is a special invitation to attend the ISM-SABIS® Book Launch event on Monday, October 8, from 4:00-5:30PM in the PAC.  Please join acclaimed writer and education expert, James Tooley, for the release of his latest book, From village School to Global Brand.

Upper School Summer Enrichment Program

We are pleased to once again roll our Summer Enrichment Program. Upper school students are invited to join our four-week long program running from July 1-26. We’re offering a wide variety of courses designed to meet many different needs and interests. Some courses are for school credit and can be used to meet ISM graduation requirements, some are designed to prepare students for a rigorous course here at ISM or for the college experience in general, and some are offered purely out of academic interest. These classes will generally be offered Monday-Thursday and will take place before noon. The availability of these classes depends on how many students register.
