The ISM Athletic Department promotes lifelong fitness, confidence, and skill development in a variety of team sports and athletic endeavors. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and school pride are cultivated through daily practice and organized competition. ISM sports teams in grades 4 through 8 compete in the South Side Youth Organization (SSYO) and grades 9 through 12, in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), with the exception of girls varsity volleyball and badminton.

We strongly encourage all families to become involved in the Husky Booster Club.  If you have a student athlete at ISM, your contributions of time and effort are necessary to maximize our kids’ experience in sports.  The Husky Booster Club plays an active role in the success of ISM athletics. Please contact the Athletic Director or Julie Dreke (jsdreke@msn.com) to find out how you can contribute to the success of Husky Athletics.

 GO HUSKIES!!!

The Huskies have a long tradition of a strong soccer program and anticipate a great future in the new stadium that will be opened in the fall of 2012. The boys and girls teams compete in the Minnesota State High School League and our boys’ team participates in the Eastern Minnesota Athletic Conference. The boys won the conference in 2009 and 2010 and are looking to reestablish their dominance at the top of the table in the future. Both teams are excited to start playing in their new home stadium this fall!

The boys are coached by Turner Neal who has been coaching at ISM since 2007. Turner is a USSF licensed soccer coach that has coached professional youth players in Germany and competitive youth sides in the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association for both the Northfield Soccer Club and the Eastside Soccer Club. Turner has also coached in the Men’s Amateur Soccer League and is the current club coach at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Tom Schmidt spent his first year with the ISM Huskies in 2011 and led the team to a successful first season. Tom has a USSD coaching license and several years of coaching experience with youth players. Tom was an outstanding player – ending his High School career as a captain, two All-Conference awards, and two consecutive 2nd place finishes in the Minnesota State High School League State Tournament.

The Huskies also have outstanding lower level coaches. Coach Aaron Van Hout has been with the program for several years and continues to do an excellent job on the boys’ side. Lead PE Instructor Sarah Totall has been with the program for 10+ years and does a phenomenal job with our middle school girls’ program. Teacher Michelle Olson has been with the program for several years and continues to do a great job working with our grade school girls as they begin to learn the game.

The girls were coached by staff member Jessica Truhlar and by Sara Brisco. Jessica Truhlar is an outstanding athlete and coach who has competed at some of the highest levels of the game. She enjoyed her first season with the Huskies in 2011 and helped work with our growing volleyball program. Sara Brisco coaches for Minnesota Vantage Volleyball and took charge of technical development for the team. The volleyball program plans to continue their growth and development and push on to a higher level of play.

» Track and Field

For over two decades the Huskies track & field team has trained on trails, the soccer field, and in the swimming pool.  This year we are excited to practice and compete on our newly built all-weather track.  In addition to the new track we also have, new starting blocks, hurdles, high jump, pole vault equipment, and everything else required for a successful season.  The fans will be able to see all 18 events from the bleachers or if they prefer they can sit or stand along the retaining wall fences for optimal viewing pleasure.

Varsity Head Coach Joel Carufel and Middle School Head Coach Greg Willkomm oversee the program to train our 6th – 12th grade boys and girls.  They will be joined by several assistants this year to give our team the competitive edge at track meets.  If you have any questions or an interest in volunteering please contact Coach Carufel at jcarufel@ism-sabis.net or 952.918.1800 x 610.
