Chinese language instruction at ISM is offered as an elective third language course taught formally in the Upper School at ISM. In addition to formal instructional offering of Chinese language during the school day, ISM offers exciting and varied Extended Day after-school language programs, a Chinese club, summer programs, and organized study abroad opportunities.

Chinese Level I

This course is designed for High School students with limited, or no, previous knowledge of the language. Students will begin to develop reading, writing and vocabulary building skills, as well as cultural awareness. This is an interactive course with a greater emphasis placed on oral skills.  Students will also learn to read and write approximately 250 Chinese characters. Testing will be administered on a regular basis in the following skill areas: Speaking/Listening, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Composition and Memorization.

Chinese Level II

This course is designed for High School students with previous knowledge of the language.  Students will expand on their reading, writing and vocabulary building skills. They will explore cultural aspects through the reading of Chinese literature and poetry. Testing will be administered on a regular basis in the following skill areas: Speaking/Listening, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Composition and Memorization.
